Mar 15:1 And straightway [very early] in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes [teachers of the law] and the whole council [Sanhedrin] [reached a decision], and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate.
Mar 15:2 And Pilate asked him [Jesus], Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto them, Thou sayest it [it is as you say].
Mar 15:3 And the chief priests accused him [Jesus] of many things: but he [Jesus] answered nothing.
Mar 15:4 And Pilate asked him [Jesus] again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee.
Mar 15:5 But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.
Mar 15:6 Now at that [Passover] feast [it was the custom for] he [Pilate to] released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they [the people] desired.
Mar 15:7 And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound [in prison] with them that had made insurrection with him [Barabbas], who had committed murder in the insurrection.
Mar 15:8 And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him [Pilate] to do as he had ever [always] done unto [for] them.
Mar 15:9 But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I [do you want me to] release unto you the King of the Jews [Jesus]?
Mar 15:10 For he [Pilate] knew that the chief priests had delivered him [Jesus] for [out of] envy.
Mar 15:11 But the chief priests moved [stirred up] the people, [so] that he [Pilate] should rather release Barabbas unto them [instead of Jesus].
Mar 15:12 And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto [with] him [Jesus] whom ye call the King of the Jews?
Mar 15:13 And they cried out again, Crucify him [Jesus].
Mar 15:14 Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he [Jesus] done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.
Mar 15:15 And so Pilate, willing to content [satisfy] the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged [flogged] him, to be crucified.
Mar 15:16 And the soldiers led him [Jesus] away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band [of soldiers].
Mar 15:17 And they clothed him [Jesus] with [a] purple [robe], and platted [twisted together] a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,
Mar 15:18 And began to salute him [Jesus], Hail, King of the Jews!
Mar 15:19 And they smote [repeatedly struck] him [Jesus] on the head with a reed [staff], and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.
Mar 15:20 And when they had mocked him [Jesus], they took off the purple [robe] from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.
Mar 15:21 And they compel [compelled, forced] one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear [carry] his [Jesus'] cross.
Mar 15:22 And they bring [brought] him [Jesus] unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull.
Mar 15:23 And they gave him [Jesus] to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.
Mar 15:24 And when they had crucified him [Jesus], they parted [divided up] his garments, casting lots upon them, [to see] what every man should take [get].
Mar 15:25 And it was the third hour [of daylight, about 9am], and they crucified him [Jesus].
Mar 15:26 And the superscription [written notice] of his [Jesus'] accusation [charge] was written over [him], THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Mar 15:27 And with him [Jesus] they crucify two [2] thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.
Mar 15:28 And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he [Jesus] was numbered with the transgressors. [quoting Isa 53:12]
Mar 15:29 And they that passed by railed [hurled insults] on him [Jesus], wagging [shaking] their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest [are going to destroy] the temple, and buildest it in three days,
Mar 15:30 Save thyself [Jesus], and come down from the cross.
Mar 15:31 Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He [Jesus] saved others; himself he cannot save.
Mar 15:32 Let [Jesus] Christ [Messiah] the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled [also heaped insults on] him.
Mar 15:33 And when the sixth hour [of daylight, about noon] was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour [of daylight, about 3pm].
Mar 15:34 And at the ninth hour [of daylight, about 3pm] Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? [ quoting Psa 22:1 ]
Mar 15:35 And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he [Jesus] calleth Elias [Elijah].
Mar 15:36 And one ran and filled a spunge [sponge] full of vinegar, and put it on a reed [stick], and gave [it to] him [Jesus] to drink, saying, Let [Now leave him] alone; let us see whether Elias [Elijah] will come to take him down.
Mar 15:37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.
Mar 15:38 And the veil [curtain] of the temple was rent [torn] in twain [two] from the top to the bottom.
Mar 15:39 And when the centurion, which stood over against him [Jesus], saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man [Jesus] was the Son of God.
Mar 15:40 There were also women looking on afar off [watching from a distance]: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less [younger] and of Joses, and Salome;
Mar 15:41 (Who also, when he [Jesus] was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.
Mar 15:42 And now when the even [evening] was come, because it was [now] the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,
[ Today, our 24-hour days begin at midnight, whereas Hebrew days in the Bible (designated by -Heb) began at the previous sundown (about 6 hours before midnight). Therefore, Friday-Heb night (a 12-hour night), and Friday-Heb day (a 24-hour day), both begin at sundown on Thursday (using today's time).]
[ The verse above gives us a perfect picture
of a Thursday crucifixion (Good Thursday, not Good Friday).
According to this verse, Thursday-Heb
day (crucifixion day) has ended at sundown Thursday. It is now
Friday-Heb evening (Thursday evening). It is also now the
preparation day, Friday-Heb day (evening, night, morning, daytime),
which is the day before the Saturday-Heb sabbath. This Saturday-Heb
sabbath does not begin until sundown Friday. ]
[similar to Mat 27:57-66, Luk 23:50-56, Joh 19:31-42 ] [for full details see Crucifixion & Resurrection QBA ]
Mar 15:43 Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor [a prominent member of the Council], which [who] also waited [was waiting] for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved [asked for] the body of Jesus.
Mar 15:44 And Pilate marvelled if he [Jesus] were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he [Jesus] had been any while dead.
Mar 15:45 And when he [Pilate] knew it [was so] of [from] the centurion, he gave the body [of Jesus] to Joseph.
[ Since it is already evening (see Mar 15:42 above), after sundown, the 3 days (all or part of 3 24-hour days) and 3 nights (all or part of 3 12-hour nights) that Jesus is "in the heart of the earth [sepulchre, tomb]" (see Mat 12:39-40) doesn't start counting until after sundown on Thursday (crucifixion day). Sometime during the evening (after sundown) on Thursday (using today's time), the counting does begin with Friday-Heb night (part of a 12-hour night, that began at sundown Thursday, night#1), and Friday-Heb day (part of a 24-hour day, that began at sundown Thursday, day#1). ]
[ If we continue counting, we get Saturday-Heb night (a 12-hour night, that began at sundown Friday, night#2), and Saturday-Heb day (a 24-hour day, that began at sundown Friday, day#2), followed by Sunday-Heb night (all or part of a 12-hour night, that began at sundown Saturday, night#3, and night#3 counting ended either with Jesus' resurrection sometime before sunrise, or at sunrise Sunday, if Jesus' resurrection occurred on or after sunrise), and Sunday-Heb day (part of a 24-hour day, that began at sundown Saturday, day#3, and day#3 counting ended with Jesus' resurrection before or after sunrise, Resurrection Sunday). ] [for full details see Crucifixion & Resurrection QBA ]
Mar 15:46 And he [Joseph] bought fine linen, and took him [Jesus' body] down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn [cut] out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto [against] the door of the sepulchre.
Mar 15:47 And
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld
[saw] where he [Jesus] was laid.
